πŸ—ΊοΈWhat are the OVRMaps

OVRMaps are the central component of the OVER ecosystem, they are Digital Twins of the physical world created and owned by the OVER community members as NFTs.

OVRMaps are associated with the OVRLand where they have been created. They represent the 3D structure of the location and enable a) precise indoor and outdoor re-localization for AR experiences and b) remote exploration of the physical location.

Precise re-localization

When we think about the future of AR we imagine our world augmented by contextualized AR experiences that will be browsed through smart glasses and smartphones.

To realize this future, we need to overcome one great barrier: re-localization accuracy

To be compelling, AR content needs to be precisely anchored to locations and seamlessly merge with the physical world.

To achieve such a result the device used to project the AR experience (Smart Glasses or Smartphone) needs a system to anchor the AR content to reality precisely, and GPS is not precise enough to do that - and does not work indoors -. The future of AR relies on another system to lactate assets in space, called the Visual Positioning System (VPS). Such technology leverages AI and computer vision to relocate AR assets in space and requires the location to be previously mapped. OVER Maps are the enabler of the OVER VPS. This makes the OVRMaps an incredibly valuable asset; they encode the 3D structure of the physical world, and they are the portal to the future of AR.

3D Digital twins and remote exploration of the physical world

OVER Maps go beyond enabling the OVER VPS described in the former chapter. They’re also an explorable digital twin of the physical world.

Once a location is mapped, it is possible to have an immersive experience of the mapped area. It is possible to jump in the OVRMap remotely, meet and interact with other people, with their avatars in the 3D reconstruction of the location, and see the AR experience published locally in the 3D reconstruction of the area. All of this from Smartphones, Smart Glasses, VR devices, and even a simple web browser through QRCode-activated experiences.
